Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on History, Math, and English homework and discussed his Math grade and his upcoming tests. "
"The student and I reviewed subjuntivo, and practiced irregular conjugations, particularly stem-changing verbs. We also went over the differences between sino, pero, sino que, and sino tambien, and practiced using them in context."
"-Went over results of practice test 2 -- The student is in her goal range! -Went over questions the student missed in the math and writing sections of PT 2 -Developed strategies and a template outline for the essay."
"Today our focus was on the process for drawing Lewis Dot structures for molecules, determining the most favorable resonance structure, bond angles and molecular shapes. The student has a deep desire to understand chemistry conceptually and is making great progress!"
"Introduction of all three SAT sections, format, scoring, when to guess, basic topics covered. Timed sections in Writing and Critical Reading (PT 1, sections 5, 6, 10). Identified some SAT-specific grammar errors to watch out for (parallel structure, misplaced modifiers, etc.) Talked about how to approach different types of reading-based questions, difference between 'what' and 'why' (author intent, implication) questions. Independent study of SAT vocab will help, was a somewhat weaker area."
"Intro to the SAT, tutoring methods; Critical Reading Ch. 5 sentence completions review, sample q's, and practice q's; Ch. 6 passage-based reading sample questions for short, paired, and one long passage; assigned remainder of Ch. 6 sample questions as HW."
"Physics, reviewed for the student's test on Forces: net forces, equilibrium, free body diagrams, horizontal/vertical forces, gravity, tension, weight, normal force, air resistance, terminal velocity, Newton's Laws."
"I introduced both students to the ISEE prep book practice exams and taught them some test concepts that they had never encountered in school. They were incredibly enthusiastic and eager to learn, so it was a pleasure to work with them. They are both exceptionally bright, so it will just be a matter of putting in the time to familiarize them with the advanced vocabulary, esoteric math concepts, and test-taking strategy/pacing. In the next session, I will hone in on their weaknesses as indicated in their diagnostic tests."
"The student and I went over some practice problems in the verbal and math sections. I also went over some general test taking strategies with him, (example- how to answer questions with the information you're given, to read the italicized text before any passage, and to replace words with letters and numbers for easy solving in the math section)."
"For this session, we worked on the points that were going to be covered on his final exam for his World History class. We then went over any confusion he had over the subjects of Geometry and Chemistry."
"Worked primarily on analytical responses to writing assignments. Organized upcoming work and created a plan for completing it all before our next session on 8/26. We then reviewed vocabulary words for a quiz on Friday and used a new study technique (writing different sentences) to learn vocab usage that the student found very helpful."
"Today, the student and I spent the whole session on math. She printed out the assignments for the whole week, and she was able to get through all of them. Though she struggled early on, by the end of our session she was blazing through the problems on her own (volume of prisms, area of prisms, etc.). I am very proud of her hard work today."
