Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Focused on review for Calculus final. Covered the definitions of moments and centroids, as well as how to evaluate those integrals. Covered different methods of evaluating the convergence of series (ratio, integral, alternating series tests) and power series of functions. Also did a few demonstrations of power series (graphs of) to demonstrate that they actually work and facilitate a conceptual understanding."
"We worked some volume problems with the shell method. We then moved to integration by parts. Towards the end we began trigonometric integration. I assigned the student some problems to work. The material is getting more difficult, but the student continues to keep up with this pace."
"Today, we continued reviewing the student's study packet. While she can manipulate equations with great ease, she needs to keep practicing setting up the equation. She still had a few pages of her review packet to complete, so she can work on those on her own. The student should continue to practice by completing additional word problems that she has to set up."
"Finding the minimum cost for making a can of a set volume with differing price parameters for the tops and side of a cylinder.
Using the information found above, deriving the most profit gained using a demand curve.
Focused on determining which equations to use: hows and whens. No concerns at this time."

"The student worked on problems from the review assignment. We discussed how first and second derivatives are applied. I explained the concepts and gave the student the tools she needed to solve all these problems. She was diligent and showed fortitude. The student is now much better prepared to handle calculus problems."
"The student and I met for our first session of algebra 2 tutoring. The student has an important exam coming up next week so we spent most of the session reviewing for that exam. We went over a variety of concepts, including liner regression and interpreting graphs. We discussed how to use his calculator to solve certain problems. I asked the student to review what we went over before we met again."
"We started with a quick review of where they are now in the curriculum (matrices). He is feeling comfortable with those. We started back at the beginning of the year and are reviewing the entire curriculum, spending time on the concepts and subjects where he feels less sure of himself. We have done linear and nonlinear equations, reviewed what a function is, absolute numbers and graphing expressions with absolute values, graphing inequalities, and some about piecework graphs. We then spent some time discussing SATs, SAT subject tests, ACTs, when the tests are offered, and how to decide which ones to take and when to take them."
"We first went over her last exam, which, even though she didn't have a grade for it yet, was definitely an improvement from the beginning of the year. Then we moved on to the next topic, which was graphing circles. She grasped the concept of vertex form pretty well, and we worked on converting it from vertex form to standard form, and vice versa. We also worked on concept problems with inscribing squares and rectangles inside circles"
"Student 1 is still working on percents and is doing pretty well with them overall. Student 2 had more factoring review, and was doing great with it."
"I decided to teach her how to solve systems of equations involving 3 variables. We worked on using both the substitution and elimination methods, looking for ways to simplify the work. She recalled having used substitution before (perhaps with 2 variable systems)."
"During this session the student and I primarily discussed two topics, the first being finding volumes of solids using integration of given crosssections and the second being related rates. We looked at his homework problems to work on the former and we tried a couple of problems from his textbook to work on the latter. The homework went smoothly. He seems to have a solid grasp on integration and its applications."
"The student has a Calculus test tomorrow and wanted me to help her prepare for it. The test covers chapter 5 which deals with optimization and related rates, as well as understanding the graphs of the first and second derivative. In order to prepare for the test, we went over a couple of quizzes that she took regarding the same subject matter. The student had a pretty solid understanding of all of the concepts covered, and mostly wanted me to make sure that she was doing everything right. After reviewing the quizzes, and discussing where she had gone wrong previously, we finished by doing a few review problems from the book regarding optimization and related rates. She now feels confident that she will do well on her test tomorrow, and we will meet next week to go over the test and any new material they cover after it."
