For example, say you have taken a practice exam and aced the evidence-based reading section, but you struggled with data analysis and ratios on the math section. In this instance, you and your tutor may choose to skip over the section you understand, or do a brief review of concepts, and spend the majority of your time covering the section that you struggle with.

Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

Long Island, NY SAT tutoring
We reviewed the entry exam Math and Critical Reading sections and the difference between two types of exams. We focused primarily on passage reading in Critical Reading and how to find answers directly in the passage. Most of the passage reading problems the student is missing are ones where she can narrow down the answer to two choices, and she demonstrated some improvements here when she went back to find one of the two answers directly in the text. I also reviewed the essay rubric with her and gave her a related assignment to work on this weekend, in addition to finishing medium-difficult math problems in the exam prep book and doing passage reading there. Very productive session.

Today we concentrated on the admissions test essay. The student wrote two practice essays which we reviewed. While I reviewed them, he looked at 6 different sample essays, guessing the grade each received. We then went over the reasons for the scores and applied the scoring to his own essays. We wrapped up with a strategy to try mapping out the structure of an essay with the first few minutes of the allotted 25 minutes.

The student worked on grammar, vocabulary, and the long reading passages. We tried two different approaches to the critical reading section. She answered more questions correctly when working the questions and only reading the pertinent sections, than when reading the entire passage and then answering the questions. I gave her some suggestions for practicing the vocabulary. We also discussed the possibility of her bringing her test prep book with her next time.

Today we started with a basic SAT overview followed by a short math review. However, the student is very bright and already took two weeks of SAT prep though his school, so he breezed through the introductory material. We decided to move to essay discussion. He has strong pre-writing skills, so we talked about some advanced techniques like addressing potential counterarguments, that can enhance the sophistication of his writing. Finally, since he had no trouble with easier problems, we tackled some of the hardest problems from all sections featured on the SAT, which seemed a more suitable challenge for him.

We spent today going over some general SAT basics. He has never taken the SAT before, so I gave him a quick overview of it. What sections there will be, how the sections are set up, the amount of time each section is given, etc. I had him read the top of each section we worked on, both so he would know exactly what it was about and also so that he will not have to waste time reading it during the actual exam. I also showed him parts of his SAT book that help with grammar and writing skills. He did say that he enjoys math, so hopefully that section will be much easier for him. The homework I assigned is to write an essay with a prompt I showed him, and to learn the definitions of the words I had him write down. I also told him to go to the website to continue learning new words.
