We talked about the patterns we saw with fives, nines, tens and elevens and worked on writing out the twos, threes, and fours as well.  She practiced her multiplication facts, and we ended by talking about place value and lining up numbers when adding or subtracting.

This was the first session, so I got to know the student and tried to figure out his problem areas. We did a 30-minute practice SAT test, which I will analyze for next week, and I familiarized myself with the kind of help he actually needs. I plan on putting together a packet with several questions from each topic he should have covered up to now, so that we may use that to analyze weak areas. In addition, I plan on covering exponents, radicals, complex numbers, polynomials, quadratic equations, and hopefully absolute values next week, time permitting. He's a very smart kid and I'm sure once we patch up the missing information, he should have no problem tackling more advanced work.

We discussed mainly the mathematical applications of economic concepts, including:  Profit Maximization Formulas and Graphs,  PPF Graphs,  Comparative Advantage Graphs,  Price Elasticity of Demand Formula. I learned from her that she has having trouble with graphing and knowing when to use mathematical equations for problems. We will work on this next week.
