How can a tutor assist you in conquering Latin?

Latin is currently a language that is used in the Vatican and for identifying the roots of words in several languages. Latin largely contributed to the structure of Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese, and Spanish. If you're learning Latin for a class or simply for your own purposes, but you find it difficult to grasp, Varsity Tutors can assist you in finding a tutor to help you learn the language. Long Island, NY, Latin tutoring may be a great option for you if you're falling behind in your Latin course.

When learning any language, practice is very important. You need to speak, read, and write in Latin a lot before you feel comfortable labeling yourself fluent. Your private tutor can help foster an environment where you can practice your Latin and feel comfortable making mistakes. Your tutor can be by your side to show you the mistakes and then help you fix them. If you struggle with distinguishing regular and irregular first conjugations, your tutor can spend your allotted sessions with you to go over that topic until you feel comfortable moving on to other lessons, like learning about Latin phonemes. Latin tutors in Long Island can provide you with custom-made sessions that are meant for you and your learning needs.

Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Long Island, NY Latin tutoring
In today's session we began our comprehensive review of verbs with the six tenses of the active indicative. We practiced conjugating verbs of all four conjugations (including 3rd-io) for approximately a half hour. In the next half hour we completed synopses of verbs for the tenses we reviewed, and in the final half hour we parsed through a couple translation exercises and identified verbs. The students will continue practicing these tenses for extra practice, and in the next session we will add the passive voice to our review of the indicative.

This week, we did some review for the exam the student is having in class on Friday and Monday. So, we started out reviewing the sample sentences from the class lesson on pronouns, giving us the chance to practice the pronouns (which she knows well) and also just translating sentences in general. We spent a good chunk of the session practicing the conjugations of sum and possum, as well as the formation of the ablative absolute, both of which she would have gotten in school. She did well with possum, after getting straight how it is related to the forms of sum, and I think the ablative absolute made sense to her.

Today, we reviewed the use of the ablative, spending some time on how this case is used in passive constructions. We also reviewed interrogatives as well as superlative and comparative adjectives.

The student did well today! He demonstrated a strong command not only of the new material we continued today (first- and second-declension adjectives) but also of past material, such as subject-verb agreement, vocabulary, and the functions of the five cases. He has progressed well through these tutoring sessions.
