Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this tutoring session, the student and I worked on another new page of the math packet - the "completing the square" page. In this practice we worked on different strategies to use to complete the square. One such strategy was a visual method of drawing out the square to find a missing "c" coefficient. After we worked on finding the c term, we worked through the steps of solving for an x value by completing the square. After working on math, we moved on to chemistry where we talked about the following topics: ionic vs. covalent compounds, diatomic molecules, and empirical formulas. She did a great job today and was quick to pick up on many new topics/ strategies."
"We reviewed last week's concepts. I sent the student a pdf of some practice problems I put together. We practiced naming structures and did some dimensional analysis."
"The student and I worked on several subjects tonight. Her geometry homework involved plotting points on an (x.y) coordinate plane and using the distance formula and Pythagorean theorem to solve for a right triangle's hypotenuse. We also studied for a Spanish quiz that will require her to translate and conjugate eight verbs, both regular and irregular, in the present, preterite, and imperfect tenses. We also briefly glanced at her anatomy worksheets in preparation for a memorization quiz."
"Today was an organizational check in day. We went over the use of his planner, which is going well. He is writing things on the day they are due, and he says that it helps him to see the month laid out. We checked his school's homework platform for grades and went through his English syllabus to correctly set up his binder. I also began the process of tracking his organization. A major issue last year was his not using his folder, and having loose papers in his backpack. Each session, I will help him go through his backpack and we will track how many papers are loose. This week, he only had 3. Everything else was neatly organized."
"The student missed three days of school last week so he had lots of work to make up. I helped him do three experimental analyses and identify the dependent and independent variables and the control group. I also made up two more so he could practice. I think he really understood by the time we were finished. We then worked on math, taking words and turning them into equations. We worked a long time because he had so much math."
"Today we went over the student's chemistry review for her exam tomorrow. Great job on knowing most concepts on that. You have a great understanding of the fundamentals. You just needed to brush up on dimensional analysis. For tomorrow's exam, remember not to mix up unlike unit systems i.e. gallons and liters! Also, great job on reading on APUSH beforehand, we had an efficient review today. However, don't forget to highlight and read from the book next time. Countdown to exam 2! I'll see you next Tuesday at 5!"
