Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we talked about two of the student's current writing goals, which are to create the written section of her portfolio for graduate school applications and a signature talk that can work as a structure for different speeches and personal statements that she may want to use in the future. The student had sent me a link to a piece written by an artist about some of her recent work. It was multimedia, using video along with text to explain ideas and projects. We talked about the structure of this piece and how we could use it as a jumping off point for the portfolio. We also talked about the "signature talk," reading through something that the student has written for a project at her job where she will be creating an exhibit on wearables. To end, we made some plans for what to work on until we meet next."
"The student began writing the paper that she has been assigned for her sociology class and reviewed the notes and outline from the previous session"
"The student and I discussed her assignment, and she created an outline today for her paper. We discussed the theory she is using to write her paper, including her personal and professional experiences. We also practiced reading some of the theory using the strategy of "internal dialogue" to practice analytic skills. We ended the session with me giving the student some homework she should work on before our next session: 1. Read selected chapters from the textbook as related to her theory and annotate. 2. Find at least 2-4 additional recent secondary sources (no more than 5 years old) and analyze them using the internal dialogue model. 3. Do more research to see if the transcultural concept is being used in other fields."
