"The student and I focused on her Latin homework for the evening which consisted both of a longer translation and then memorizing vocabulary from that chapter. The student did quite well with her translating only occasionally forgetting that her sentence may not follow proper word order and therefore translating a direct object before she has actually figured out the verb. I encouraged her to look up words with which she was unfamiliar and to think about English derivatives for words that she struggled to remember. After finishing translating the passage, we moved on to memorizing her vocabulary for her quiz the next day. Using a piece of paper, I wrote out the sequence of words either in Latin or in English and had the student provide me with the opposite. We did this several times before she was comfortable returning the answers in either language. I encouraged her to take a short break and then come back to make sure that they were all still stuck in her head! Otherwise, the student continues to do well despite some challenging material."
"This week, the student and I worked on translating some short sentences from Latin into English, further solidifying his understanding of person and number while introducing some new vocabulary. We worked specifically with third person singular nouns. By the end of our lesson, he was readily forming these verbs. Great work! We ended with a brief discussion of the Aeneid, picking up where we left off last week. We talked more about the Trojan war. The student brought forward his knowledge of Agamemnon from class and we framed the story around that. For next week, he may review new vocabulary and the third person singular form with "t.""
"The student has a test tomorrow on deponent verbs, semi-deponent verbs, subjunctive forms, and irregular verbs. It was a lot of material to cover in only 1.5 hours. That said, I was pleased to find that he had a very good grasp of what he needed to know, and we started systematically reviewing the topics for the test."
