We did a formative writing assessment for sight word recognition and spelling. We also created a sequencing Thinking Map using a familiar story. We identified the problem/solution, characters, and the order of events. We read familiar texts out of sequence to check accuracy and decoding of tricky words. The girls read books every night from the books I leave. As these books are at the girls' Instructional reading levels, they are spending too much time decoding, so they insert and omit words. I will replace these books with easier books that the girls can read independently.

We did a guided reading lesson on using context to figure out vocabulary words and character analysis. We worked on the difference between character traits and character emotions. We also did a sight words assessment. The student was very positive and eager to read. I left her with another book to read and to analyze the main character in a graphic organizer.

We did a line-by-line critique of last week's homework. The result was the best essay the student has written so far. It summarized Alexander's argument nicely and mentioned the rhetorical tricks Alexander used to convince his troops to continue their advance into Asia. For next week, he will write another timed essay with special attention to the three-minute revision period. If fewer typos appear, we will continue to work with the current 12-35-3 budget for the essay. If it becomes apparent he needs more time for revision, we will discuss how to adjust that budget to take into account that extra time.
