Session Summaries by College Essays Tutors

Lisle, IL College Essays tutoring
We did a little algebra in addition to the English work. The student is definitely on top of her algebra! We just finished up the little bit remaining on her homework on direct relationships, and she was great. Her writing assignment is such a frustrating one because there's so much to write about on her topic but it's just supposed to be five paragraphs! But we spent a lot of time trying to communicate as much as possible in just a few paragraphs. She's got a lot of great ideas! Tomorrow we'll work on some outlining and freewriting exercises. She is really fun to work with and I look forward to our next session!

We did a little bit of creative writing to get his mind going. We then began to write a new essay starting with a regular planning page and a more intricate planning page to get him to form more creative sentences.

We did a lot more reading today, plus grammar work. I'd like to focus more on grammar, alongside reading and writing, so the student can understand the basics of English grammar. The student loves sentence and word scrambling. Next Monday, I will ask what it is that makes some activities fun while the others are tougher for her. Homework was given to her.

We did a more in-depth look at The Golden Compass, and a review of grammar skills. I gave the student a pop quiz on the grammar and writing material we have gone over thus far. It had 30 questions. He did well on it. The part he needs to work on is being able to identify active and passive voice sentences. We will continue to work on this. He has to finish The Golden Compass, summarize the remaining chapters, type out a two-paragraph summary of the book, and one paragraph telling likes and dislikes of the book. In addition, I gave him some active and passive voice exercises.

We did a passage of the ACT English section and went over the student's results. She showed progress in the reading comprehension questions that she had previously struggled with. She also said that she was beginning to understand the way the questions are asked better. Next, we talked briefly about writing introductions and working introductions. I showed her two sample essays of timed writing assignments that scored highly, and we talked about what was done effectively in each introduction. Then, she wrote a practice essay based off of last week's outline. She did not quite finish in the time, so she will write the last two paragraphs next week, and then we will begin working on revising.

We did a phonics drill and then worked on one of the tasks from the phonics bricks kit, with short vowel sounds that change to long vowel sounds when you add an e to the end (fin becomes fine). The student also practiced writing the words he constructed. We read a few books, including The Eye Book by Dr. Seuss, which contains sight words as well as rhyming patterns. We also re-read "I See and See." To end the session, he read the book we had begun on Saturday. He is a pleasure to work with.
