Lindenhurst, IL Test Prep tutoring
The student and I spent this session working on the Critical Reading section of the SAT, with an emphasis on vocabulary. As we've worked through reading passages and Sentence Completion questions in this and past sessions, it's become clear that several of the questions the student finds most challenging revolve around vocabulary with which she's unfamiliar. With that concern in mind, we explored a variety of techniques for coping with questions that depend on unfamiliar words, including: * using context clues to establish tone and logical relationships for the word in question; * using the process of elimination to rule more-familiar words out (or in); and * looking at the unfamiliar word to see if it suggests more-familiar related words, and using the meanings of the latter to help decode the former. We applied these techniques to both Sentence Completion and Passage-Based Reading questions, and then embarked on a vocabulary enrichment exercise based on common word roots, prefixes and suffixes. I asked the student to keep a running list of any unfamiliar words that she encounters between now and her test date, to look up their meanings and note any roots they contain, and to practice using them in sentences whenever possible.

Today we reviewed the mathematical concepts from yesterday, then began to practice with vocabulary skills. Specifically, we reviewed perimeter and area for various shapes. The analogy/ verbal reasoning was very similar across the Middle and Upper Level tests. As such, we went over some strategies for how to approach this section. Since the student seemed to have the strategy down, we practiced timing. With the verbal sections, her biggest struggle was with vocabulary and definitions. We identified some of these words and made flashcards and played some interactive vocabulary games so she would get used to using them in context. I also taught her how to break words down into their parts. This should help her approach unfamiliar words in the future. I left her with a list of common prefixes, root words and suffixes to memorize for Monday.
