"During this lesson, the student and I continued our work on reading comprehension. He is stronger than his parents have indicated when it comes to reading comp, but work still needs to be done. It is very difficult to understand how SAT writers want students to read, and to understand the difference between an answer in English class and an answer on the SAT. He is getting it, and I feel good about our progress."
"We worked on math and reading sections. He has improved his reading section a lot but still needs to work on the vocabulary."
"Today was our first session, so we focused on diagnosing her quantitative skills (since this is the area she said she was weak on). Based on the work that she did today, she has a strong foundation in arithmetic and logical reasoning. However, she struggles with word problems and needs to be taught geometry and formulas for algebra (i.e. circumference, area, etc.). We will work on these skills for math. I was able to hear her read, and from what I heard and saw, she is reading at grade level. However, the test is measuring the student's ability to make inferences above grade level and to recognize Tier 2 and Tier 3 words, which she sometimes needed help with. She was able to determine main idea from reading but had some struggle with making inferences from details within the reading. I can help with this. I left her with homework to do the problems for tomorrow so we can see what her verbal reasoning skills are. Overall, she had not taken the test before, but I think we will be able to get her ready for the SAT if we build the math content knowledge and work on some inferencing skills for reading."
