"We started out with flashcards and the dots game as usual, and then, because she had finished all of her homework, I had her read a short biography of Queen Elizabeth I. Once we got into it, she seemed really fascinated and started asking a bunch of questions. I'm going to start bringing some more historical non-fiction for her to read, in order to broaden her horizons."
"The student was studying for Algebra 2 final. We went over additional materials from the test including solving polynomials, parabolas, and quadratic equations. I have utilized her textbook and the learning tools to solve problems."
"For our first session the student and I first covered three major theorems of vector calculus - Green's, Stokes', and Divergence. Then we delved into his practice exam and explored some more topics, including parametrization and surface integrals. Throughout this session (and moving forward) we are prioritizing intuitive understanding over the nitty-gritty math details. The student is adept at making the necessary calculations, so he would rather focus on the concepts behind the equations and methods. We worked through some informal proofs of the "big theorems" and some geometric properties of triple integrals. To supplement his understanding, I provided him with some links to math sites that continue to improve my intuition of math to this day. Overall we made good progress throughout the course material, and for Tuesday's session we should be ready to work through some more practice problems."
"We covered PEMDAS (order of operations), squaring negative numbers, and how parentheses affect this (comparing -2^2 with (-2)^2). We also went over cubing negative numbers and how parentheses affect this (comparing -2^3 with (-2)^3). Then, we used this knowledge to evaluate problems."
"Today, we finished up our discussion on log functions and moved to exponential decay and growth. This included identifying the graph based on a function given as well as graph functions based on a function given. The student is coming along very well in these subjects. I am confident that he will excel."
"Great first session with the student! She had gone through the first two sections of material in her textbook (Linear Equations & Quadratic Equations), and had specific questions ready. We went through everything that she was unsure about and talked briefly about the sections that she is planning to study before our next session. At this point she seems very comfortable and confident with the material, and is very capable of articulating her questions and areas of confusion. I think we will work very well together to get her prepared to test out of College Algebra."
