Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session we covered more material on geometry for the assessment. This will be more of a matter of practice and something we focus on in future sessions."
"We went over a grid-in type the Math Section. We went over the questions together and the student was able to correctly answer them. I assigned him the following homework: Do all three Math sections of a practice exam under timed testing conditions. Then to score himself to see where he stands. I think he has a strong math foundation and is very smart."
"The two students have been very diligent about completing their assignments. Student one's math scores have improved dramatically, and student two is a fast learner when it comes to new grammar concepts. We went through writing tests today, and established new rules for approaching specific problems. They should have essays and a Writing section done for next time."
"We began with a vocabulary quiz and then spent time going through the practice test she took, which she did extremely well on! I scored the essay from the test, identified her weaknesses, which included grammar edits in-context, staying focused and remembering her strategies in later critical reading sections, and working through extrapolation questions on critical reading passages. We then practiced essay planning, working on a strategy to begin by drawing a quick idea tree, then writing the introduction to the essay and the topic sentences of each body paragraph."
"The student completed the writing section of the English II released test. He did well scoring 15 out of 21 correctly. He then completed a persuasive essay and emailed it to me so that I may make notations. We also covered the items suggested by a teacher at his high school who is working with him."
"Today, the student and I switched from our regular physics routine to working on math. We did some practice by doing his pre-calculus homework which was very geometry based. It was calculating the area of a triangle in multiple ways using different formulas. He said geometry was the hardest for him, so we then moved to do the problems at the end of the geometry section in the SAT book. We were able to complete all but two of the problems which were of the hardest in the geometry section. He will continue to review the math problems in the SAT book."
"Followed the SAT physics review textbook. Reviewed basic concepts of physics before jumping right in. Completed up to chapter 3 of the text; had the student solve a couple random questions from each section. Then we compared answers and whatever she had questions on, we went over together. Next week I'll come with problem sets so she has more exposure to the SAT type questions instead of just the written text."
"We covered the photoelectric effect, the formula for the energy of a photon, how to determine the latent heat of fusion, series circuits, Joule's Law, and Ohm's Law. Since this was my last session with this student, I did not assign him any additional work save that which he was already going to do in preparation for the SAT Physics test."
"We continued our work from last week, working first on math and then on writing. The student is very proficient at proportions, which we covered this week. We refreshed the relation between proportions, ratios, fractions, and percentages, to great success. Plowing forward in the writing section, we are expanding our knowledge of how the SAT handles writing questions."
"The student is doing great. We're reviewing isolated concepts at this point. Odd functions. Parallelism in writing. Tone in CR. She's making steady progress across the board."
"We worked on an assignment for Unit 8 of AP United States history. After answering a few questions in short format we developed a five paragraph essay addressing the constitutionality of Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase. The student is getting back to me as to the date of her next test, and I hope to use our next session studying for it! She is incredibly bright and has a very mature style of writing. The one thing we had to work on was comprehension of rather esoteric primary source materials and parsing them into a coherent argument. This will become easier with continued practice."
"We talked about the assessment that she took in October and her scores. Her critical reading went up significantly. We also talked about strategies for an upcoming essay."
