Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first in person meeting. We agreed to spend this meeting discussing the application essays required by the university for admission. The student brought a draft of his first essay (they require two essays) and we worked on it for the full 90 minutes. I read it and responded to the argument he presented, checking for accuracy of the writing against his intended points. Then I began a line by line assessment to locate and cut extraneous material. We discussed grammar and comprehension and word choice. After we had examined the entire essay, upon which I'd written copious notes, he agreed to edit it down and send the rewrite to me on Jan 23. He has done so. He will also start shaping his rough draft for the second essay. Our next meeting is Monday."
"The student began on her English homework. I read most of the short story and she answered the questions that she had been given. I had her read a little bit. We tried different methods to see which she was more comfortable with. She is an excellent student!"
"This 1.5 hour session focused exclusively on assisting the student with his upcoming vocabulary test. This test will be on 20 words assigned from his English class. The student and I spent the session covering each of these words in detail. I first presented the words to the student and he noted them in his notebook. I then constructed a vocabulary quiz that helped the student recognize similar and contrasting words to the assigned words. The student initially missed five words off of the quiz. When I went back over the words, the student missed three words. The student and I covered the list of vocabulary words five times during the session. The student retained the list of words for extra practice."
