Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I completed the focus free write for Thursday, analyzing the nature of George and Lucy's relationship as shown in chapter 20 of A Room With A View. We then analyzed The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and The Poet Laments the Coming of Old Age in preparation for Tuesday's free write."
"Today was my first session with the student. I will be tutoring her in chemistry and Spanish. She is reviewing for her exam that she has tomorrow. The topics covered defining compounds/elements and homogeneous/heterogeneous mixtures and the phases of matter. Overall, she did well. She definitely has the potential to do well on her exam tomorrow."
"Continued to work on Lesson 1 in the student's creative writing course. We worked through grouping ideas, developing a thesis, and writing a first draft. We made plans for finishing the first lesson for next week, when we will move on to Lesson 2"
"Today we went over the writing section of the SAT, including grammar questions and the essay. I had the student try to develop some ideas from two different essay prompts, and I suggested that he try to do at least an outline on his own. I gave him a full sample SAT and answer key to work with."
"Today the student and I worked on reading for thirty minutes and spent the second half of the session working on rounding. He seemed to grasp the concept of rounding when I demonstrated it visually with a roller coaster example."
"The student prepared for his pre-calc exam by completing the review sheet from his teacher. This covered topics such graphing functions from parent functions, finding the inverse of a function, composite functions, inequalities, etc. The student was prepared, had already reviewed the problems once, and needed to review them a second time. "
"The student and I reviewed the test he got back that day covering Chapter 1 topics: algebraic equations, graphing algebraic equations, basics of probability, and word problems. We also took time going over his homework that was due the next day."
"The student and I worked on his upcoming math test material. He's learning stem-and-leaf plots, box and whisker tables, bar graphs, line graphs and histograms. We discussed the differences between them and I had him tell me which graph he would use in different scenarios and why. He has a math test on the 17th, and says he doesn't know when his tests are in other classes so we continued working on memorizing multiples. He's doing really well, and there are only a few things he still gets stuck on."
"The student and I worked on approximately 30 vocabulary words. He took his time sounding out the 3 or 4 syllables and when he heard the entire word, he excitedly called it out. Following was his definition and his explanation of how the word is used. We then worked on reading comprehension and a short writing assignment where he used a pencil and paper. The second step was to give more details orally while I wrote down the details. He then spoke the entire piece of about 7 sentences. I followed up by writing out his final draft. It was a good piece of non-fiction writing with a creative final sentence."
"The student and I went over more practice problems for her test on Tuesday. We focused on problems with quadratic functions, visualizing 3 dimensional shapes, and volume/surface area problems (especially with circle based shapes). I left her with some suggested problems from a practice test and reviewed solutions for her to practice with over the weekend."
"We went over the chapter the student is working on this week in algebra, focusing on function notation. Then she took a practice English ACT, and she scored a 19. We started going over the questions she missed. She needs to work on answering the actual question that is being asked -- answering as if she's using written and not spoken English -- and maintaining the same level of carefulness during the entire test."
"We reviewed one of the English sections that the student completed for homework, finished covering English concepts, and started going over Mathematics strategies and concepts. We covered Pre-Algebra, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and a good portion of Coordinate Geometry. She was assigned one Mathematics section for homework."
