Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student worked through more practice test simulation. He does very well with time. I gave him instructions to work through a test section on his off day for us to review on Thursday."
"We covered ray optics, constructive/destructive interference, refraction, the kinds of images created by converging/diverging lens/mirrors, thermal physics, how heat can raise temperature or change phase, thermal expansion, the zeroth, first, and second laws of thermodynamics, the heat engine, efficiency of an engine, some modern physics, the electromagnetic spectrum, the experiment of Ernest Rutherford, Bohr's model of the atom, emission spectra, the two postulates of special relativity, time dilation, and length contraction."
"The student and I briefly looked over the writing section and looked at some common errors that occur in the sentence correction section. We then focused on math for the remainder of the time. Mostly we continued to review practice test questions. She also took a timed section, and we discussed how she should approach the math sections on Saturday. She's been improving with math."
"The student and I reviewed her results from her practice test and did a little extra work on science."
"We mostly covered math. We worked through the last half of a practice test. We had review sessions on advanced trig, graphing equations, logs, calculating volume, and logic."
"We went over all of the topics of the SAT subject test in chemistry. The student was very knowledgeable in most of the topics as she had just taken the AP chemistry test. I instructed her to do practice exams tonight so we can go over them tomorrow. She only needs extra reassurance on the nuances of specific topics. She is very intelligent and a good student. I think the session left her much more confident in her understanding."
"Today was our last session. We focused on the student's application of critical reading strategies to several passages in the test prep book. She made some progress tonight and hopefully is feeling more confident about those types of questions. She also did very well on the writing questions."
"We first went over some basic functions on the calculator that would make length calculations much simpler as long as he understood how and why to use them. Then we covered vocabulary, and his grasp of higher level words was noticeably better. However, before the SAT he should still be flipping through flash cards whenever possible. The student then practiced the method for vocabulary of knowing what the blank should be before seeing his options. We went over some harder grammar questions, and he was able to use strategies he had seen before to his benefit."
"This was my last section with the student. We started by reviewing the sections he did for homework. We then progressed to a critical reading section and then math. Finally we finished with another critical reading section. Overall, he has improved significantly."
"The student and I covered the reading section and a little of the science section today. In the reading section we focused on strategies that would allow him to use less time on each section. In science we focused on the passage comparison questions. He was struggling most with time management and maintaining focus. Using the new strategies, he managed to achieve a scaled 33 out of 36 on a timed reading test. Next time we plan to focus on the science section to improve his performance. He plans to work on the test as a whole a little each night until his test."
"In today's session, we reviewed the Math section of Practice Test #8 in the SAT study guide. We focused our review on Geometry problems. We also focused on answering questions strategically including omitting those questions he is unsure of. We also spent some time focusing on using alternative strategies including back-solving, picking numbers, adding lines to diagrams or breaking down complex diagrams into more familiar shapes. We did additional practice from the Math sections in Practice Test #9 to apply these strategies. He was left with extra practice in math and high yield grammar problems for the writing subsection. Our last session will be on Friday 6/6 at 5:30pm. (Today's session was an extended session of 3 hours in length)."
"The student completed 2 math sections since our last session and scored a 29 and 31. Then, we discussed the English section. We went over all of the important grammar rules and writing strategies and looked at several types of common questions and tricks that come up on the ACT. We finished with a practice passage. He did well only missing one question. For next time, I asked him to complete a full practice test now that we have gone over each section."
