Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we reviewed the practice work that the student had done and he took a practice test, which we then graded and reviewed. He did very well on his assigned practice. As extra practice, he will take another practice test under simulated conditions, and continue to read at least 30 minutes a day."
"Today, we covered half the practice test the student did in preparation for our studies. I'm focusing on strategies to help her eliminate wrong answers and choose answers with higher accuracy when she doesn't know some words. Her math accuracy is high, so she shouldn't need a lot of help there."
"The student did practice tests in sentence completion, reading comprehension, and grammar. He was introduced into several new rules that should improve his score. Lastly, he did a practice essay."
"We reviewed several passages from a practice SAT. He did better with each passage we reviewed. Based on his practice test, he would have scored close to 600- which is his goal for the test. He has vocabulary he plans to work on to boost his knowledge before Saturday."
"Today we did more test simulation. The student does great in timed practice tests and made it through several sections with an almost perfect score. He has been instructed to review vocabulary flashcards and practice vocabulary on his off day."
"Today was the student's last session before she takes her test on Saturday. We began with a review quiz on vocab and then moved to grading her most recent practice test. The results were fairly positive - overall slightly lower than her last practice test, but still in a good range. We then went over the more difficult problems. During the second half of the session, we focused on Writing practice and Math practice for the more difficult questions. She feels well-prepared and is excited about the test on Saturday!"
"Today the student and I began reviewing all the sections of the ACT. We started with English, and she scored a 30. Next we did part of a Science section. For the next two session we will continue to do this review and wrap up any loose ends. I asked her to take a practice ACT over the weekend and come to our next session with any questions she might have."
"As this was our first session, we went over the questions on her previous ACT test. I noticed she really struggled with the story problems so we will focus more on those in the upcoming sessions."
"Today, the student and I reviewed the math and English sections of practice test 5. He just had a few questions on the math portion which we cleared up. We then went through the English section together and talked about each question. He has been doing really well, and I think he is prepared to take his next ACT."
"The student and I worked on a Math section for the majority of the session. She has come a long way in terms of understanding mathematical concepts. We worked on strategies for breaking down problems and understanding what underlying math concept was needed. We ended the session with a writing prompt. She is really good at discussing the prompt, taking a side, and prewriting."
"The student and I spent our last session reviewing her last full-length practice test and addressing her lingering questions and concerns about the SAT. She asks thoughtful questions and has gotten much more confident tackling the various question types found on the SAT. She is a very strong essay writer and has a good grasp of the grammar concepts tested on the writing sections. She found the math sections challenging so we spent extra time reviewing the approach to function problems and breaking down word problems. I will email her a summary SAT tips handout."
"We covered essay writing and math. The student has not had very much experience with the SAT other than doing a few sections of the practice book. We got acquainted with things like the grid-in, section length, etc. She is very quick and picks up on concepts I teach/review without much difficulty. The wording of word problems with math is her biggest difficulty. I told her to try another reading section for tomorrow."
