Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on horizontal parabolas - how they differed from vertical parabolas, how to tell them apart and how to extract the focus and directrix from the parabola equation. She was initially challenged with the concept of the focus and directrix but once she grasped the concept she solidly understood the math and the steps of the problems. She also reported that she got a B+ on her parabolas quiz!"
"The student had a retest on Friday covering the areas of circles, trapezoids, squares, triangles, and irregular shapes, and she was able to improve her score. Today we worked on her homework worksheet involving volumes of rectangular prisms, cylinders, and triangular prisms. Then I gave her worksheets covering volumes and surface areas of prisms, cylinders, and cones. She has a formula quiz tomorrow, so I gave her a few short assignments to review formulas for area, volume, and surface area."
"We went over the student's re-test and her homework assignment, which covered surface area and volume. Upon reviewing the test, we found her mistakes to be quite simple. For example, she accidentally skipped a question or wrote in the wrong numbers. I provided test-taking strategies to alleviate these mistakes, such as taking your time and checking over your work thoroughly."
"During this session, the student and I went over an AP exam problem set. We worked through the problems she had been having trouble with on her own. Because they were AP exam questions, some were more conceptual and different from what she was used to. She did a good job working through them, and we were able to finish quickly enough that we had time to look at a couple of questions she had about a practice SAT she had taken."
"We started our first session with a conversation about the student's motivations for seeking tutoring, his areas of need, and how I plan to set up future sessions. Then I had him work on a diagnostic test for algebra II while I reviewed his course materials and past tests. Judging from our conversation and the diagnostic test, it looks like will need to devote time to word problems in each session as well as conduct extra practice on current and previous class topics. He has a large assignment in geometry due Monday, so I asked him to complete it before our session Sunday so we can go through it together before he turns it in. He seems like a strong student, and he says he generally does well with class materials but then doesn't perform up to his expectations on tests. I will include test-like practice in future sessions."
"Today we continued our work on solving systems of three equations. We moved on to solving systems of three inequalities and applied our previous knowledge to achieve the same results. We then worked on graphing inequalities and systems of inequalities, which the student was able to do for the most part. She struggled somewhat with identifying which part of the inequality was valid. By the end of the session, however, she was able to fill in the correct part of the graph based on the systems of inequalities given."
"The student has a quiz tomorrow, so we reviewed his homework and reviewed the chapter. He was having a hard time with the law of sines and the unit circle, so we spent extra time explaining that."
"The student felt that his midterm went well. We talked for a bit about what material was covered on the test and then proceeded to work through lecture notes. The notes covered confidence intervals for z-scores and t-scores."
"We covered hypothesis testing, Type I and Type II errors, and P-values. She is picking up the concepts fairly well. She will have more example problems for our next session."
"Today we went over the student's homework on logarithms. She also had some questions from yesterday's homework. She understood the general concept of logarithms. She's still in the same unit, so there haven't been any graded tests yet. I don't have any concerns from this session."
"The student and I reviewed exponents and also went on to cover ratios and proportions which is a new area to him. We went over how to read situations and assign proper proportions as well as how to solve them. I sent him extra worksheets for practicing this material as well as a review test he will be having on inequalities."
"The student has a test on Friday and wanted me to help her prepare for it. The test is on chapter 6 which covers integration. She had a list of problems she wanted to work on, as well as quizzes to look at. We worked on everything from rectangle area estimation to regular integration. There was nothing in particular that she needed help with and she was able to do all of the problems with little guidance from me."
