Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student took the SAT. Her weakest two sections were the math and writing. Another tutor has helped her in writing, so we focused on math. She has a good foundation of math. She just seemed to have trouble setting up certain problems, especially word problems and probability. After reviewing her exam, I gave her several practice problems to address those math subjects. She did very well. She is a bright student and can definitely improve her score to her goal."
"Covered: conversions for math section. Reading and Science testing strategies: prereading questions before looking at the materials, how to infer data from charts and figures, answering questions methodically, using process of elimination."
"In today's session, the student and I worked on her homework. The homework was pretty extensive, but she seemed very confident when solving the problems. She had some minor issues when finding the limits of trigonometric functions, but once I explained the method, she understood the concept pretty well. She also had some difficulty solving limits with 2 fractions, but after I explained it a couple of times, she mentioned that she understood how to solve these types of problems. Other than a few minor questions about solving some problems and identifying limits from a graph, she was very comfortable with the material. "
"The student and I reviewed his summaries from chapter 6-8. He did well in remembering the events. He took a quiz over chapter 8. He got a 100%. We began reading chapter 9 together."
"The student and I reviewed his take-home Chem test that covered mostly types of separation (distillation, filtration, chromatography). He completed most of it and seemed to understand it better afterwards."
"Worked with the student on his homework in math and geography. He seemed to be having more trouble focusing than usual. However, he did well with his practice, and I notice that he is making great progress on his geography concepts."
"We reviewed the conflict in the Middle East for a test make-up on Friday. The student knows a lot of the vocabulary, but needs to focus more on the players and circumstances surrounding the conflicts in the Middle East from the last 20 years."
"During this session we mainly covered electric fields. We went over how to use the electric field equation, how to rearrange it and combine it with other equations to solve the problem. We also covered electric fields conceptually, making sure we understood which way to draw the electric field lines and which way point charges would move in an electric field. We also reviewed vector addition again, in more detail. The concept and equations involved in vector addition seemed to sink in more this week for him."
"We worked on an essay, one reading section that the student completed prior to the session, and we completed on section for writing together. We wrote the introduction and conclusion to an essay and discussed talking points and examples for the body paragraphs of the essay."
"Today, the student and I prepared for his upcoming pre-algebra final by working through a review that his teacher had provided. He performed well, though he needs to remember to read directions. When discussing his performance on a previous quiz, it was discovered that he had lost 16 points (and could have scored a 99) had he read directions."
"This class we did two critical reading exercises, one easier than the other. The student did pretty well on both of them. And then we began reading a new book."
"We kept going with the books and the student is improving in her reading. She trusts herself more now with sounding things out on the page. We worked on writing some of the sight words to help her make the connection between reading and writing. As always her letters are quite good when she writes things out."
