Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the Science passages from one of the practice tests in the ACT prep guide. Then we did a practice Prose, Social Science, and Humanities passage. At the next session we will do a practice Natural Science and then cover the strategies for doing each type of passage."
"The student and I did very well this session. We primarily focused on English and French (with an emphasis on English grammar) and she was very quick to pick up on what I was going over with her. After our session, her improvement was very visible and I was pleased with her progress. She is a very bright young lady."
"We reviewed oxidation numbers and balancing equations based on electron transfers. He did really well with this and seems to understand the concepts. He even got a number of very difficult questions correct. Next session we will be working on the properties of water and aqueous solutions."
"Today the student and I covered momentum for her upcoming physics final. We're going to try to meet a few times before her final to go over the concepts that she's struggled with since the beginning of the year (before she and I started working together). She seemed to grasp momentum pretty well, so I'm not incredibly worried."
"Tonight the student and I completed her math homework. We reviewed worksheets I had brought where she had to read a story and answer questions in complete sentences. We went through them and I helped her to identify the keywords in the story and work on expressing it in a complete sentence. We will focus more on this in her next session."
"We discussed some of the problems from yesterday's session a little more, then jumped into the next section, which deals primarily with real-life mathematics applications. We covered all of that material and began looking at the sample problems at the section's end that the student had found challenging. We will continue with those when we next meet, Saturday."
"We went over the student's last prep essay, focusing on improving structure. Since she had not done the last practice test, I also had her do the verbal section and quantitative reasoning section of her 6th practice test, and reviewed the problems she got wrong. She did much better in the verbal section, missing only six this time. She also did well in the quantitative reasoning section, only missing four. For the quantitative reasoning section, we focused on how to derive an equation out of a word problem, which is what she has the most difficulty with."
"The student had created responses for assignments in both his classes. We reviewed each assignment, and discussed the few changes that were needed. He revised each assignment according to our discussion, which included adding more content to his writing and revising some sentence structures and mechanical errors. There were two very short assignments that he created content for after we brainstormed together methods of effective answers. We also reviewed two grammar assignments which he revised after reviewing sections from his course book."
"Today we worked through a multiple part word problem involving two related functions and how to compare them graphically. Several questions involved explaining the answer. I suggested beginning by restating the question, which helped him. We finished that and had time left over to review algebra. The student has gotten a lot better at solving for a single variable."
"We spent our tutoring session practicing English - grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. The student feels confident on this part of the test. He did quite well on all of the areas. It was a really good session!"
"During our session, we made sense of the student's professor's lecture, and practiced solving roots and linear/ non-linear inequalities. The student seems to have progressed quickly in remembering and feeling comfortable with more basic algebra -- exponents, factoring, properties of negatives/ positives. She will bring her textbook tomorrow so that I can suggest some practice problems."
"Met with the student at his request for one last review before his geometry test. We reviewed all the problems and completed worksheets to prepare him for the exam. He was encouraged to talk aloud while working out the problems to reduce his amount of errors when working problems with multiple steps. When following up with him the next day, he reported feeling confident with his performance on the exam."
