Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we went over a few rules the student's teacher had for inserting quotations into his essays. We also started talking about his two most recent books and tried to find themes they had in common in preparation for his final next week. He was able to come up with a long list of possible themes and topics, and we narrowed it down to three possible topics he could write about. His mom said his grade went from a B to an A-."
"The student and I looked at the review packet for his English class final exam. We reviewed grammatical concepts such as participial phrases, gerunds, appositives, and dependent and independent clauses. He did exercises out of his grammar textbook. He maintained his focus and learned the concepts very well. I left him with the assignment of making flashcards for the vocab words that will be on the final."
"The student and I worked on her study words to prepare her for a quiz. We practiced spelling the words and using them in sentences. I helped her to develop some mnemonic strategies to remember correct spellings. We also read a book - Scooby Bakes a Cake - and located the study words in the text. After finishing the story, I asked her some inferential questions to practice comprehension. She seems to be learning fast and always has a good attitude. She brings excitement to each session."
"I worked with the student on letter sounds. I had him perform rainbow-writing of letters, followed by tracing the letters with his index finger while repeating the letter name. I also worked with him on an educational app."
"I worked with the student on the areas she did not perform well in at school this week. We reviewed her sight/spelling words and practiced them. We also reviewed what she missed on her other homework packet pages. We discussed that she needs to practice the words she missed over break."
"I worked with the student to review for his final exam in English. We talked through terms and characters for "Antigone" and "Pride and Prejudice." For our next session, the student will have practiced terms (using flashcards) and made a flowchart for the plot of "Antigone." I will spend some time prepping a quiz for him on quotes from both "Antigone" and "Pride and Prejudice.""
