Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

Lenexa, KS MCAT tutoring
Today we started the session with a review of The Jungle, which we discussed yesterday. The student was very quick with names and plot questions, and we did a brief recap of some themes before moving on to Death of A Salesman. She said that the play was one of the topics that was fresher in her memory, and she did seem to have a relatively good grasp on the characters and the general story line. We worked on some quote identification and analysis, outlined several practice essay questions, and looked back through a few of her in-class writing assignments. At the end we discussed a plan for the next few sessions, and I gave her a sheet with some sample essay topics from The Jungle (which she was a little more shaky on) to look at during the coming week with plans to go over them briefly in a mini-review next session.

The student and I began covering electrochemistry by discussing the concept of reduction potentials and how Gibbs free energy can be related to these potentials. We also covered what determines whether a reaction is spontaneous and the definition of standard state. We worked problems at the end of each section which emphasized how to use certain equations to determine how much energy a reaction could produce based on starting concentrations of the reactants and products.

Topics Covered: Logarithm expressions & equations  Progress: the student told me he did very well on his quiz earlier today. This is great news and a wonderful progress report. He seems to have a firm grasp on the current topic of logarithms. We will meet again either next Tuesday or Wednesday and prepare for a chapter test to be administered in the latter part of the week.

The student and I first started working on her Chemistry homework, which covered redox reactions. She worked out a few problems with me.  She already had a pretty good understanding of the material and only made minor mistakes. After she felt comfortable with redox reactions, we moved onto Algebra II. In Algebra II, the student is learning how to add and subtract rational functions and how to simplify complex fractions. After working on several problems, she said she felt comfortable working them on her own so we moved onto World History. We worked on writing thesis statements for a variety of the AP essay topics that she was given in class. Overall progress was good. We were able to accomplish a lot in the session.
