Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student gave me his writing response to review, and I had him work through a short multiple choice writing practice session. We moved on to the math section next. He is very intelligent, especially when it comes to math. It seems as if his problem currently is needing to slow down and reading the directions and questions carefully. He doesn't miss many practice questions, but the questions he does miss are usually because of a reading error. We talked about test taking strategies for the math section, and then I had him work through some practice problems. His homework is to complete the other two math practice test sections that include the number box responses."
"The student and I reviewed her diagnostic test and focused on the reading comprehension section, as well as the identifying sentence errors portion of the writing section. I made a list of study tips and approaches for the individual types of questions in those sections."
"The student authored another book using some of her sight words, played her matching game, and proved that she was understanding more sight words through a game. I estimate that within the next two weeks, she will be ready to be introduced to the second part of the sight words list that I had found for her at the beginning of our tutoring relationship."
"We reviewed chapter 8 in preparation for the student's test tomorrow that covers the entire chapter. We completed practice quizzes covering all the sections and a chapter test. Topics included distribution of products of binomials, finding the greatest common factor, multiplying polynomials using FOIL, and simplifying quadratic expressions. We also reviewed some basic terminology such as monomials, binomials, trinomials, etc., and degrees of a polynomial."
"We went over some of the problems she had trouble with on the practice exam. I also gave her homework to make sure she retained some of the problems we have discussed during the last couple of sessions."
"The student and I met for an extra session on Friday evening to get a little further on tricky grammar rules and to practice a little bit of math. She picked up the grammar rules quickly even if she admitted that they didn't seem intuitive. With a bit of practice, we'll make sure the rules stick and are easy to spot."
"We finished the student's spring break packet of essay questions. He did outlines for 13 different FRQ questions and reviewed the relevant material. For the last 30 minutes of the session we began to discuss specific test taking strategies and familiarized ourselves with the format of the test. Only 3 weeks away!"
"The student began the session by taking week 2 words from grade 2. He scored 12/16. We read chapters 5, 6, and 7 in The Magic Tree House. Next, we did and comprehension and vocabulary review. Lastly, we reviewed his spelling words that we will assess next week."
"This was our first session. We covered what sort of review he had done on his own, how his school class had proceeded, and what book he was using to review on his own. We then started with the earliest history reviewing key words, creating a list of IDs the student didn't instantly know, and the proceeded to work through the chapter. We did this for two chapters. We reviewed at the end of the chapters and verbally worked through two essays. We created a shared Google doc for the unfamiliar terms for the student to work through in his leisure."
"We prepared for the student's upcoming test on a absolutism in Europe in the 17th century. We reviewed the ideas behind absolutism and the ways in which it was implemented in different parts of Europe, and went over details about some of the important wars, conflicts, and treaties during that period."
"Today we worked on a textbook packet and then worked on some organizational material for the next month. Good session."
"First time session re: AP Euro. The student seems remarkably bright, so I feel there is a great potential in him. We are meeting again tomorrow to discuss the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment."
