Lemont, IL Physics tutoring
The student has her physics final in two days, and she has completed a practice exam in advance of this. First, we went over some MCAT review, where she'd completed half of the biology portion. I told her to be finished with the biology portion and get started on general chemistry by the next time we met. I also told her it would be good to take a practice biological sciences test to mark her improvement. In the physics, we reviewed some problems from another practice test. She has a good mind for equations and always knows how to start the problems. I observed her work on the problems and steered her in the right direction when she got off track. She is very good at the algebra of her problems and has no problem working with variables. Her style of solving problems is to reduce the answer to a mixture of letters and plug them all in at the end. This is a very useful skill, but my worry is that a small mistake in the middle could lead her off course and that the inherent logic of the physics will be lost on her. For her next practice test, I told her to actually solve the problems instead of put them in terms of known variables, in order to check that she got the same answer that her teacher got. I think she will do well on the test, but she must be focused and quick on the day of the final.
