Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The session went well for the first time after break. We were able to get everything done that was due for Thursday, which was the outline and works cited page. I asked him to write up an intro for Thursday. We will begin writing on Thursday, but I would like him to have a bit done so we don't have to spend time during the session writing."
"I started off the session by reviewing some of the vocabulary we've been working on, primarily body parts and different verbs. Doing this at the beginning and end of each session seems to work best. Next we played another word association drawing game: the theme was "Park" and we switched off drawing and spelling words associated with parks. The student was hesitant with some of the multi-syllable words, but was able to sound them out accurately eventually. After this we moved onto reading, finishing up a story we started one or two days ago. We continued to alternate reading every other sentence or page, and to reinforce new vocabulary words. He likes to act them out, especially action verbs, and has become quite enthusiastic about it. We followed with two exercises out of his school books, both on fill in the blank vocabulary. We ended the session by pointing to body parts, saying the term and spelling them; likewise with the new action verbs. I also asked him about parts of speech again, which he continues to improve on, but still needs practice with."
"Today, the student and I worked on writing an essay for her private high school application. The topic had to do with diversity, and we brainstormed some ideas. Together, we wrote a rough draft for the essay. She will type up the essay and send it to me for some final edits over the weekend."
"The student and I worked on reading nonfiction articles. We took turns reading the articles out loud, and then discussed what we were reading. We continued working on his comprehension and using context clues to help him create understanding."
"We went over the use of conjunctive adverbs to add information and clarity to sentences in a sophisticated way (based on the student's paper about the pandas, she has some issues with appropriate variety in sentence structure). She picks up the grammar concepts quickly and is retaining what we talk about from week to week."
"For this session, the student completed his career assessment experience composition. Throughout the session, I meticulously went through the composition with him, noting sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. The end composition was well done and well structured and a piece of written material by him that he can be very proud of."
