Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started working on math during this session. I first had the student create a graphic organizer to help her remember key words that would help her determine which operation to use when solving a word problem. Next, we started working through some of the math skills on the test. After this, we did a review of the reading vocabulary words from the last sessions. Next, we went over more of the math skills. The student did very well. Most of the math material seemed to be a review for her although there some concepts she needed extra instruction to fully understand. We did a large amount of practice for each concept. Also, she remembered her reading vocabulary words very well."
"The student and I looked at the ACT Science test for the first time. We examined each passage type and looked at several practice questions. The student did very well, and will practice with ACT flashcards before I see her again."
"We decided to spend the majority of the session tackling the essay portion. She is a very strong writer, and I feel the essay would receive at least a 10 or 11 out of a possible 12 points. We went over the guide's suggestions for time management during the test. We also looked at additional sample prompts and used the list we previously created to discuss how to develop her ideas into an essay."
"We covered some of the sections that were not covered in the student's class. Specifically, this included microscopy, cell theory and then in genetics we covered some of the patterns of inheritance, spermatogenesis and oogenesis as well as crossing over and linked genes. The student has a strong understanding of the concepts."
"The student and I briefly worked on vocabulary questions, but she was quite good at them and needed little help. We then focused on math, focusing on setting up equations and solving geometry problems with angles. I asked her to take the practice math sections of the SAT for next time in order to determine her math score and which problems she continues to have problems with."
"Used two essay prompts from the exam. Client struggled in organizing his thoughts a bit with the second prompt, but after editing the second essay together it was a solid product. Finished the session with a baseball question."
"This is my first session with the student and it went well. I have discussed the high level details about the Math sections in SAT, the Math concepts that are tested, and the different approaches for problems. I have also asked her to try few SAT Math questions. She was able to successfully answer few but struggled on few questions. I explained the problems that she got wrong. I have analyzed few Math concepts that she needs help. In my next session I will discuss the concepts and give her some practice problems."
"I challenged the student with obscure vocabulary words, the British lit passage about Trabb's boy, and some of the hardest math questions from the book. My thought process was that this tough preparation would make the actual SAT seem like a breeze. She was a great student these last 2 months. She always completed her assignments and had a positive, easygoing attitude each session. I think she has improved tremendously and will carry that success over to the real test."
"Today we went through yet another SAT Math Level 1 practice test and wrapped up the last few questions from last week's practice test. We specifically thought about geometry problems but addressed any concept that came up. I wouldn't say the student struggled with anything. There are some tricky problems that require practice and she was able to grasp some of the difficult concepts pretty quickly (like exponential growth/decay). She had a positive attitude towards the material. In terms of strategies or study skills, I let the student know how to approach exponential growth problems, creating the same base with multiple numbers, using 10 as a base as a shortcut for logarithmic problems, and not getting confused by F(a letter other than C). The student performed at a high level."
"The student and I worked on the Reading and Writing sessions. She is making excellent progress on the Writing portion, but I would still like her to study her vocabulary more, because most of her incorrect answers on the critical reading portion stem from her not knowing certain words."
"The student began by updating me on school and the PSAT. Next, we went back over sentence completion and reviewed the strategy she learned back in September. She is doing a great job with this. Next, we began to work on the math section. For homework, the student will complete the last ten practice questions from the section we began together, complete and score a full test worth of sentence completion, and read Chapters 15-18 as we discussed. In our next session we will review sentence completion and continue working on the math section."
"- Corrected the sections she'd done for homework. - Worked on vocab. - Talked through strategies for approaching passages and questions. - Her homework is to do 2 more sections, 1 more easy (outline two theses, pick one and write it), and make mo"
