PASSAGE
(1) A honeybee colony is a marvel of social organization, a highly structured society where each member has a specific role to play in the survival and success of the whole. This intricate system is divided into three distinct types of bees, or castes. (2) At the top of the hierarchy is the single queen. Her primary function is reproduction; she can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day, ensuring the continuation of the colony. Her pheromones also regulate the unity and behavior of the hive. (3) The vast majority of the colony's inhabitants are worker bees, which are all sterile females. They perform nearly every task necessary for the hive's upkeep: foraging for nectar and pollen, producing wax to build the honeycomb, feeding the queen and larvae, cleaning the hive, and guarding it from intruders. (4) The final caste consists of the male bees, known as drones. Their sole purpose is to mate with a new queen. They do no work in the hive and are expelled from the colony before winter, when food resources become scarce.
