PASSAGE
From 'Roots in the Side Lot' (2019). When our neighborhood association hatched the plan for a community garden, we talked mostly about tomatoes. We calculated yield per bed, joked about zucchini surpluses, and debated heirlooms versus hybrids. A year later, the vegetables are fine, but the real harvest happens on Saturday mornings, when people who once waved from car windows now kneel shoulder to shoulder pulling weeds. New residents learn who keeps tools in their garage; toddlers toddle between rows; a shy teenager became our unofficial irrigation expert. The garden has fed potlucks and conversations that would not have happened otherwise. We still swap recipes, but we also swap phone numbers and watch one another's houses. If the tomatoes failed tomorrow, I suspect we would still show up.
