Explaining Needs & Wants - Portuguese

  1. At a hotel front desk, complete: "Eu ___ de um quarto para duas noites."
Answer: preciso With "eu," precisar becomes "preciso": "Eu preciso de um quarto." "Precisa" is tempting, but it goes with ele, ela or você, not with eu.
  2. You have a headache and go to a pharmacy. Complete: "Preciso de um remédio para dor de ___."
Answer: cabeça "Dor de cabeça" is a headache, so "cabeça" (head) fits. "Cabelo" is tempting because it looks similar, but it means hair.
  3. At a bus station, translate: "I need to buy a ticket to Rio."
Answer: Preciso comprar uma passagem para o Rio. "Preciso" means "I need" and is followed by the infinitive "comprar." "Quero comprar" is tempting, but it means "I want to buy," not "I need to buy."
  4. Which request to a restaurant host is written correctly?
Answer: Eu gostaria de uma mesa perto da janela. Gostaria needs "de," "de + a" contracts to "da," and "mesa" is feminine, so "uma mesa." Leaving out "de" is tempting because English says "I would like a table," but Portuguese requires it.
