PASSAGE
Passage 1
The modern skyscraper, with its steel frame and curtain wall construction, is a marvel of engineering. This structural system allows buildings to reach unprecedented heights because the exterior walls do not have to bear the building's weight; instead, an internal steel skeleton supports the load. This innovation, pioneered in the late 19th century, freed architects from the limitations of thick, heavy masonry walls, enabling the creation of the tall, slender, and glass-covered towers that define city skylines today.
Passage 2
Ancient Roman architects were masters of the arch, the vault, and the dome. Their greatest innovation was the widespread use of concrete, a material that was both strong and versatile. By combining concrete with arched structures, they could create massive, durable buildings with large interior spaces, such as the Colosseum and the Pantheon. Unlike earlier post-and-lintel systems, which required many columns, the Roman arch could span wide openings, distributing weight efficiently to supporting piers.
Both passages describe major architectural innovations. The innovation in Passage 1 led to __________, while the innovation in Passage 2 led to __________.
