PASSAGE
From an original poem, "What the House Kept."
When we sold the house, we took the obvious things:
the photographs, the good china, my mother's ring,
the quilt her mother stitched from her father's shirts.
We left the doorframe in the kitchen
where my height was penciled every year until I stopped
growing, and the small brass hook by the back door
where the dog's leash used to hang, and the window
that stuck in August and opened easily in March.
I think about the family who lives there now.
I hope they know they inherited a language
and that the walls are still speaking it,
quietly, in a dialect only the house remembers.
The poem's distinction between what the speaker "took" and what the speaker "left" most directly develops which idea?
