PASSAGE
From a novel: Coach Whitaker did not believe in speeches. He believed in silence, and in the peculiar power of standing in a locker room without saying anything while sixteen teenagers gradually stopped fidgeting and looked at him. He had won three state championships this way. He had also lost seven, but nobody counted those. Tonight, before the semifinal, he stood by the whiteboard and did not draw on it. He did not clear his throat. He did not check his watch, though the game was in twelve minutes and the referees were already on the floor. When the room was finally, completely still, he said: "You are going to lose tonight if you play like you practiced this week. I am not going to tell you how to fix it. You already know." He walked out. The door swung shut behind him. Marcus, the point guard, looked at the ceiling and swore under his breath. Then he stood up, and one by one, the others did too.
Which detail best supports the conclusion that Coach Whitaker's method depends on trusting his players to hold themselves accountable?
