PASSAGE
From a play, Act II, Scene 3.
[The stage is divided by a scrim. On the left, DELPHINE sits at a kitchen table in 1962, writing a letter. On the right, her granddaughter YAEL, in the present, sits at the same table, reading it. They speak their lines in alternation, though neither can see or hear the other.]
DELPHINE: If you are reading this, I have failed to destroy it.
YAEL: If I am reading this, she failed to destroy it.
DELPHINE: I want you to know I considered it. Many times.
YAEL: She considered it. Many times. I can see the folds.
DELPHINE: But some silences are worse than any confession.
YAEL: —worse than any confession. She was right.
DELPHINE: So: I loved a woman named Ines. For thirty-one years.
YAEL: [after a long pause] Thirty-one years. And no one knew.
The playwright's choice to stage the letter as a split-scrim dialogue between grandmother and granddaughter—rather than, for example, having Yael read the letter aloud alone—chiefly accomplishes which purpose?
