Read the following poem:
"Hand-Me-Down"
My brother drops off a box
of his son's old clothes.
"Still good," he says,
as if goodness is a fabric.
I lift a tiny sweater,
smell the detergent and a year
I didn't get to have.
My daughter twirls in it anyway,
arms too long, grin too wide.
I thank him, too quickly.
After he leaves,
I fold each piece
into a neat square,
trying to make room
for what won't fit.
Which inference about the speaker is best supported by "smell the detergent and a year / I didn't get to have"?
