Read the poem below.
"Receipt"
I keep the grocery slip in my wallet
like a pressed leaf—thin proof
that something green once mattered.
The cashier's hand was quick, indifferent;
my hand was slower, learning
how paper remembers what I won't.
At home, I unload: salt, oranges,
a jar of honey that looks like late light.
I fold the receipt into a square
and tuck it under a bowl
as if it could stop the fruit
from bruising.
Later, the numbers fade first.
The ink lifts off like a moth
leaving only pale wings:
TOTAL, TAX, THANK YOU.
In the blank where the cost was,
I write your name,
so I can pretend
I paid.
