PASSAGE
Listen to this conversation at a community health clinic between a nurse, Sandra, and a patient, Mr. Osei.
Sandra: Mr. Osei, your doctor reviewed your lab results and wants me to go over a few things with you. Your blood pressure is higher than we'd like, and your cholesterol is also elevated.
Mr. Osei: Both of them? I thought my diet was pretty healthy.
Sandra: You may be eating well in some ways, but are you getting regular exercise? Physical activity affects both of those numbers.
Mr. Osei: Not really. I walk to the bus stop, maybe ten minutes each way. That's about it.
Sandra: That's a start, but the doctor recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days. Walking is perfect — you'd just need to do more of it.
Mr. Osei: What about my medication? My neighbor takes something for blood pressure and it really helped him.
Sandra: The doctor wants to try lifestyle changes first — more exercise and some adjustments to your diet — and recheck your levels in three months. Medication is an option, but not the first step for your numbers right now.
Mr. Osei: Three months feels like a long time if my numbers are high.
Sandra: I understand the concern. But your levels are elevated, not dangerously high. Making changes now could bring them down without needing medication long-term. If they don't improve in three months, the doctor will absolutely reconsider.
Mr. Osei: Okay. I'll try to walk more. Can you write down what changes I should make to my diet?
Sandra: Of course — I'll print out a sheet for you before you leave.
Why does the doctor recommend lifestyle changes before prescribing medication for Mr. Osei?
