PASSAGE
Mara kept a small notebook in her hoodie pocket, the kind with a bent spiral and smudged cover. Whenever her mom asked, "How was school?" Mara would say, "Fine," and write the real answer later—who laughed when she tripped in gym, how her stomach tightened when the teacher read essays aloud. On Tuesday, Mr. Duran announced a class anthology. "One page from each of you," he said. "No names—just voices." He set a cardboard box by the door for submissions. At lunch, Mara's friend Tessa slid over. "You're lucky," Tessa whispered. "You can write anything if it's anonymous." Mara nodded, then lied without thinking. "I'm not doing it." That afternoon, Mara wrote a page about her dad's empty chair at dinner and the way silence could feel like a heavy coat. She folded the paper small and held it in her fist all the way to school. At the box, her hand froze. If the page was good, Mr. Duran might read it. If it was bad, someone might still recognize her. Behind her, Tessa said softly, "I wish I could say what I mean." Mara unfolded the paper, smoothed it once, and dropped it in. The next day, when a voice on the page described silence like a coat, Mara didn't look at the floor. She looked straight ahead and breathed.
