PASSAGE
In the early days of space travel, rockets had one main job: to escape Earth's gravity. Reaching orbit takes enormous speed, and that speed takes huge amounts of fuel. But carrying all that fuel makes a rocket heavy. To solve this, engineers use stages, which are separate sections that drop away once their fuel runs out. Dropping the empty stages lowers the weight during flight and makes reaching orbit easier.
Modern space missions also depend on careful planning after liftoff. Satellites must be placed in the right orbit for their job. A weather satellite may need to pass over many parts of Earth. A communications satellite may need to stay above the same region. Planners work out flight paths, fuel for small changes, and launch timing so each rocket reaches its target.
New technology is changing the cost of space travel too. Some rocket boosters can now return to Earth and fly again. This means engineers do not have to build a brand-new booster for every mission. Together, staging, orbit planning, and reusable parts make space travel more practical.
