PASSAGE
On the bus, the city slid past in pieces: a mural, a corner store, a dog tugging at its leash. I sat with my backpack on my knees and tried to practice my new address in my head, like it was a line in a play.
My old street had been easy. It had a name that sounded like a song. The new one felt like a code.
At the next stop, an older kid bumped my shoulder and didn't say sorry. I watched his reflection in the window instead of his face. The glass showed me too, smaller, smudged, like I was already fading into the background of somebody else's life.
When the bus turned, sunlight flashed across the seats and then disappeared. For a second I couldn't tell if my eyes were watering from the light or from the thought of leaving.
