PASSAGE
During the 1930s, the Great Depression caused many banks to fail. It also left millions of people out of work. This event affected President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He faced pressure from struggling families and business owners. Roosevelt supported one main idea. Government should take a larger role in steadying the economy. That idea shaped his New Deal programs. These included job-creation projects and new rules for banks. As the New Deal grew, some Americans began to expect the government to act during hard times. This changed public debates about the meaning of "security" and "opportunity." At the same time, critics argued that too much government power could threaten freedom. Their arguments influenced later elections and policies.
How did the Great Depression most directly influence President Roosevelt in the passage?
