PASSAGE
The river behind the neighborhood looked higher than usual, but it still moved with the same steady sound, like someone breathing.
Mr. Alvarez stood on the bank with a measuring stick and a notebook. "Two inches above last week," he said. His voice was flat, careful. "If it rises another foot, we start sandbags."
Keira heard "sandbags" and pictured water swallowing her street. She remembered the storm from when she was five: sirens, wet socks, her mom carrying photo albums. "We should leave now," she said. Her words came out too loud.
Noah, holding a fishing pole, squinted at the ripples. "It's fine," he said. "The river always looks dramatic after rain." He smiled like the whole thing was a story he had heard before. "Besides, we've been waiting all week to fish."
Mr. Alvarez wrote another note instead of arguing. Keira watched his pencil move and wished it could draw a safer ending.
Which choice best explains how the author shows different viewpoints about the rising river?
