PASSAGE
On a windy Friday, Carlos carried a cardboard box onto the classroom rug. The box rattled when he set it down. "It's for our history project," he said, and his cheeks were pink.
Yuki knelt beside the box. "What's inside?" she asked. Carlos lifted the lid. Old-looking postcards, a tiny compass, and a folded map lay on top of shredded paper.
"My grandpa let me borrow them," Carlos said. "But we have to be careful." He put on cotton gloves that were too big for his hands. Yuki's eyebrows rose, and she pulled her sleeves down over her wrists.
Ms. Rivera clapped once. "Groups, begin!" she said. Carlos slid the compass toward Yuki. "You can hold it," he said.
Yuki paused, then took the compass with both hands. "I won't drop it," she said quietly.
The story suggests that Carlos is responsible. What evidence supports this?
