PASSAGE
Recess should be at least 25 minutes long for elementary students. This is not just for fun. It helps learning because kids come back to class ready to work.
First, longer recess improves focus because movement helps the brain reset. A 2022 report from a state education department looked at recess. It found that schools that added 10 minutes saw fewer behavior problems in the next class. At Pine Hill Elementary, referrals after lunch dropped from 9 per week to 5 per week. This happened after recess got longer.
Second, recess builds social skills. Students practice solving small problems on their own. For example, Sofia said that during a soccer game, her group learned to take turns being goalie. These moments teach fairness and teamwork.
Some adults worry that longer recess cuts learning time. But students who focus better often finish their work faster. So 25 minutes of recess is a good choice for both behavior and learning.
In paragraph 2, what evidence does the author give to support the reason that longer recess can improve focus?
