PASSAGE
When a honeybee visits a flower, it is not just looking for food. The bee drinks nectar for energy. Pollen also sticks to its fuzzy body. When the bee flies to the next flower, some of that pollen rubs off. This helps the plant make seeds.
Pollination is important because many fruits and vegetables start as flowers. Apples, cucumbers, and pumpkins all depend on pollinators. If fewer pollinators visit flowers, fewer seeds form. Then fewer plants grow.
Bees can find flowers by smell and by noticing colors. Some flowers even have patterns that guide bees toward the nectar.
Diagram: A flower is labeled with the anther and the stigma. The anther is where pollen is. Arrows show pollen moving from one flower to the stigma of another flower.
How does the diagram with labels and arrows add to the reader's understanding of pollination?
