PASSAGE
The Silk Road was a group of trade routes between China and the Mediterranean. It grew because people wanted goods they could not make at home. Traders crossed deserts and mountains as they moved goods. Silk was so valuable in the West that people named the routes after it. The routes also spread ideas between cultures. Later, sea routes grew popular. Ships were faster and cheaper, so the Silk Road slowly declined.
Why did the Silk Road decline, according to the passage?
