PASSAGE
Coral reefs are built by living things called coral polyps. Coral polyps build hard skeletons that grow bigger over many years. Algae live inside the polyps and make food using sunlight. Because of this, reefs need warm, clear water where sunlight can reach. Coral reefs are home to many animals. Fish, sea turtles, octopuses, and sharks all live near reefs. When the ocean gets too warm, corals push out their algae. Then the coral turns white.
According to the passage, why do coral reefs need shallow, clear water?
