Section 1
Why Do Stories Have Parts?
People have been telling stories for a very, very long time. Even before people could write, they told stories out loud! Every good story has a plan. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Let's see how storytelling grew over the years.
Long, Long Ago
Ancient Greece
Fairy Tales
Today
So here is the big question: What does each part of a story do? That is what we will learn in this lesson. You will become a story detective!
Section 2
The Three Parts of Every Story
Every story you read has three big parts. Each part has a special job. Let's learn about all three!
The Beginning
The Middle
The End

Section 3
Story Map: See the Parts
Here is a big picture that shows you the three parts of a story. Look at how the beginning comes first, the middle comes next, and the end comes last. Each part has a job to do!
Look at the picture above. Do you see how each box has a different job? The beginning tells us who and where. The middle brings the excitement. The end closes it all up. When you read a book, try to spot all three parts!
Section 4
How Each Part Works
Let's take a closer look at what each part of a story does. Knowing these parts will help you understand any story you read!
๐ฆ The Beginning Introduces the Story
When a story starts, the author wants you to feel ready. The beginning introduces the characters (the people or animals in the story). It also tells you about the setting (where and when the story happens). Sometimes the beginning also gives you a little hint about what the problem will be.
Things You Find in the Beginning:
๐จ The Middle Has the Action
The middle of the story is where the big things happen! A problem shows up. Maybe a character gets lost. Maybe something breaks. Maybe two friends disagree. The characters try different things to solve the problem. This is the part that makes you want to keep reading!
๐ช The Ending Concludes the Action
The ending is how the story wraps up. The problem gets solved (or sometimes it doesn't, and that's okay too!). We learn how the characters feel at the end. The ending concludes the action โ that means everything comes to a close. There are no more questions left. The story is done.

Section 5
The Story Mountain
Many readers and teachers use something called a Story Mountain to show how a story goes. It looks like a mountain! The story goes up, up, up in the middle until it reaches the tippy top. Then it comes back down at the end. Let's look at it!
See how the story goes up like a mountain? At the bottom left is the beginning. As things get more exciting, the line goes up. The very top is the biggest moment โ the most exciting part! Then the line comes back down as the problem gets solved. The bottom right is the end.
| Story Part | Where on the Mountain | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Beginning | Bottom left | We meet the characters and learn the setting |
| Middle (going up) | Going up the mountain | A problem shows up and things get exciting |
| Middle (at the top) | The peak! | The most exciting or important moment |
| End | Coming down to the right | The problem is solved and the story wraps up |
Section 6
Let's Look at a Real Story!
Here is a short story. Let's find the beginning, middle, and end together!
Bella's Lost Kitten
Finding the Story Parts
- 1
Step 1 โ Find the Beginning
The story starts by telling us about Bella (the character) and the farm (the setting). We also meet Snowball the kitten. This is the beginning because it introduces the story. We learn who the story is about and where it happens. - 2
Step 2 โ Find the Middle
The problem is that Snowball is lost! Bella looks in the barn and under the porch. She asks Sam for help. These are the events or actions in the middle. Things are exciting because we don't know where Snowball is! - 3
Step 3 โ Find the End
They hear a "meow" from the apple tree. Sam climbs the tree and brings Snowball down. Bella hugs her kitten. The problem is solved! The ending concludes the action โ Snowball is safe and Bella is happy. The story is done. - 4
Final Step โ Put It All Together
The beginning introduced Bella, Snowball, and the farm. The middle gave us the problem (lost kitten) and the exciting search. The end solved the problem and showed us how Bella felt. All three parts work together to make a great story!
Section 7
Comparing the Parts of a Story
Now let's compare what each part does. This will help you tell the parts apart when you read on your own!
| Question | Beginning | Middle | End |
|---|---|---|---|
| What does it do? | Introduces the story | Shows the action and problem | Concludes the action |
| Do we meet characters? | Yes! This is where we meet them. | We might meet new ones too. | We see how they feel at the end. |
| Is there a problem? | Not yet (maybe a small hint). | Yes! The big problem happens here. | The problem gets solved. |
| How does it feel? | Calm, like getting ready. | Exciting, maybe a little scary! | Peaceful, happy, or satisfied. |
| How long is it? | Usually short. | Usually the longest part! | Usually short. |

Section 8
Bigger Ideas About Stories
You are learning about the three big parts of a story. As you grow as a reader, you will learn even more about how stories are built! Here's a peek at what comes next.
| What You Know Now | What You'll Learn Later |
|---|---|
| Beginning, Middle, End | Introduction, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution (five parts!) |
| Characters are in the story | Characters change and grow during the story |
| There is a problem | The problem is called a "conflict" and there can be many kinds |
| The ending solves the problem | Sometimes the ending surprises you or teaches a lesson (called a "theme") |
Right now, the most important thing is to be able to find the beginning, middle, and end of any story you read. Once you can do that, you are ready for all the bigger ideas later. You're doing a great job!

Summary
What We Learned
Summary
Every story has three important parts that work together. The beginning introduces the story by telling us about the characters (who is in the story) and the setting (where and when it happens). The middle is where the problem shows up and the exciting action takes place. The characters try to solve the problem, and things get interesting! The end concludes the action โ the problem gets solved and the story wraps up so we know how everything turns out.
Remember the Story Mountain: the story starts at the bottom, climbs up with excitement in the middle, and comes back down when everything is resolved. Now, every time you read a story, look for the beginning, middle, and end. You are a story structure expert! ๐โจ
