Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over reading comprehension and more math today. He worked very well today, and we got a lot accomplished. We started with several reading comprehension passages on which I timed him, and he did really well on them. Then we transitioned to math. We did more algebra (manipulating equations) and geometry (finding the perimeter and area of figures). He did really well with both and enjoyed drawing math robots that he would chip away at every time he got a question right. That seemed to help him get through the work. We also went over some sample test problems which he needed a bit more help on. I specifically wanted to start doing this so that he can start transferring what he's learned to the test. He needs to continue practicing test problems."
"This was my first session with the student. First, we reviewed SAT vocabulary, focusing only on the vocabulary words beginning with "A." Each day, she is to review the vocabulary words for the first four letter of the alphabet, then the next four and so on each day. This will ensure that she knows all of the vocabulary words before the test. I developed strategies she can use to better understand them. By the end of the analogies lesson, she showed great improvement. I also conducted a 25 minute prompt, similar to one found on the SAT. She did quite well and we found ways to improve. We ended with more analogies."
"For our session we firstly finished up her reading response, as well as the rubric associated with it. The students reading response was insightful and really captured the meaning of the book she was reading. After we completed her reading response, we moved on to working with decimals in preparation for her SAT. Her friends had told her there was a lot of decimal work on the SSAT and as a result we decided to work on it together. We started with basic multiplication of decimals and transitioned late into dividing with decimals. We will continue to work on dividing with decimals at our next session."
