Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, we reviewed the targeted practice I gave the student on Tuesday (problem sets on area, perimeter and volume; and Algebra). We focused particularly on the area/perimeter problems that are commonly tested on the SAT and used strategies such as breaking down a diagram, drawing a picture, or adding a line to the problem to make shapes that are easier to work with. We then covered some advanced topics in algebra 2 (function evaluation, sequences, and data evaluation). We also spent some time reviewing the critical reading assignment given last session, and reviewed ways to approach the sentence completions and more difficult reading passages. For next session, I assigned him: -Practice Test #7 in the SAT study guide, which he should take under similar test conditions to the real thing (he should take the exam all in one sitting, during the morning, and in a quiet setting with few distractions) -Completion of the problem sets started in today's session (functions, sequences, and data evaluation). -Section #6 (Writing, pages 718-723) in the SAT study guide. -Section #7 (Passage Based Questions, pages 725-728) in the SAT study guide."
"Went over perpendicular and parallel line rules, using algebra embedded in more algebra, vocabulary check, grammatical errors in the writing section."
"I met with this student for the first time. We discussed her goals and her current progress. As I'd discussed with her mom, I had organized my thoughts regarding improving the reading section and we talked through them. We spent time doing sentence completion; she was good, but needs to expand her vocabulary, ideally through reading. In addition, we did one passage together. Her biggest concern is focusing on the passage, though I was happy with her effort. I asked her to complete 2 more passages and look forward to seeing if she was able to concentrate and focus and take small steps to improve."
